Founded in the summer of 2025, The Frame Archive begins its first project phase with a focused study of works by Swiss modernist painters, documented within their original frames.

This initial step lays the foundation for our long-term undertaking. Over time, the archive will broaden its scope to provide a comprehensive representation of European framing traditions. The goal is to create a detailed, research-based cartography of frames and framing practices, making their regional variations, craftsmanship, and evolving aesthetic functions across periods and artistic schools traceable and comprehensible.

The Frame Archive aims to become a central reference and resource for both scholars and the art interested public. In doing so, we contribute to highlighting the picture frame as an essential element of art and exhibition history, while opening up new perspectives on artworks, artists, and modes of presentation.

Swiss Modernism

What unfolded across Europe in modern art can be traced in the example of Switzerland. Around 1900, a decisive period of transformation began in the design of picture frames: while heavily ornamented gilded frames still dominated exhibitions and collections, many artists increasingly favored simpler, often individually designed frames that maintained a close relationship with the artwork itself.

This shift reflects a profound aesthetic rethinking that affected both painting and modes of presentation. It is closely linked to reforms in the applied arts, changing economic conditions for artists, and far-reaching developments in exhibition practices.

Ongoing Research

The Frame Archive is currently focusing on four artists.

This is just the beginning.

What begins with Swiss frames will unfold into a far-reaching cartography of European framing traditions—a living archive shaped by research, collaboration, and curiosity. As we broaden our horizons, deepen our inquiries, and welcome new voices, The Frame Archive will continue to evolve. We are only at the beginning.
